It is said to have comefrom the library of Lorenzo de Medici; and its bind-ing was apparently executed at the beginning of thesixteenth century. The characteristics of this Flor-entine manner would be difficult to describe, as theelements of design and the methods of workmanship,which accompany it, differ but slightly, from thoseused by the Venetian binders: but upon a com-parison, the difference between the two manners issufficiently obvious. The binding of a copy of theEnchiridium Grammatices, of Eufrosino Bonini, Flor-ence, 1514, also in the British Museum (C. 66. d. 9.),affords another instance of Plorentine workmanship,unlike either of the foregoing examples. This book,which is figured in Plate IV., is covered in brownmorocco ; and bears a cameo in high relief of JuliusCaesar, repeated on either cover, and sunk into theboards, which are of wood, and of an unusual thick-ness. By this device, the projecting surfaces of the IV.
