Distinguished bytlie chestnut crown, black line through eye, andblack bill. Range: l^reeds throughout the United States,south to Nicaragua, and north to southernCanada; winters in the southern United Statesand southward. Habits and economic status: The chippingsparrow is very friendly and domestic, andoften builds its nest in gardens and orchardsor in the shrubbery close to dwellings. Itsgentle and confiding ways endear it to all birdlovers. It is one of the most insectivorous ofall the sparrows. Its diet consists of about 42per cent of insects and spiders and 58 per centof vegetable matter. The animal food consistslargely of caterpillars, of which it feeds agreat many to its young.
