Text Appearing Before Image:
d displays superb powers of flightwhich even the eagle cannot surpass, and nosmall part of its time is spent in the upper air, descrilnng great circles on motionless wings aSif for the mere pleasure of flight. Let anotherbuzzard, however, discover a carcass, and themovements of our aeronaut as he hastens tothe feast are at once noted by his next neigh-bor, and his by a third, till the carrion feedersof a wide territory are assembled. Sight andnot smell, then, is depended on by the buzzardto guide him to his food. Thougii of greatstrength and provided with a formidable bill, the buzzard rarely, if ever, attacks living ani-mals, unless they are disabled, but dependsupon death to provide for his wants. No doubthis ability to fast is as great as his capacityfor gorging himself when occasion offers, andhe must often go for days without food. Asa scavenger the buzzard does good service andshould continue to enjoy the protection whichis at present accorded it in nearly every Stateof the Union.
