f a mile long by a quarter mile wide, is asspectacular in action as that of Kilauea. This enormous volcanic mass has grown of its ownoutput in comparatively a short time. For manydecades it has been extraordinarily frequent in erup-tion. Every five or ten years it gets into action withviolence, sometimes at the summit, oftener of recentyears since the central vent has lengthened, at weak-ened places on its sides. Few volcanoes have been soregularly and systematically studied. Kilauea The most spectacular exhibit of the HawaiiNational Park is the lake of fire in the crater of Kilauea. Kilauea is unusual among volcanoes. It followsfew of the popular conceptions. Older than the tower-ing Mauna Loa, its height is only four thousand feet.Its lavas have found vents through its flanks, whichthey have broadened and flattened. Doubtless itsown lavas have helped Mauna Loas to merge the twomountains into one. It is no longer explosive like theusual volcano; since 1790, when it destroyed a native
