n passed overwhen suddenly there flashed into his mind a brilliantidea that promised results. Just ahead was a bridgeover Juniper Creek, quite a good sized stream thatflowed into Harrapin River above Clifford. Passing down the incline that led to the bridge,Frank managed to make the car act wabbly, as I70 COLUMBIA HIGH ON THE GRIDIRON though there might be something the matter. Andas it ran on to the boards of the bridge itself, hebrought it to a sudden stand. Whats wrong here? demanded Jim, angrily.( The engine had stopped working. Ill get out and see, observed Frank, suitingthe action to the word, and opening up the hood ofthe car. Dont you try to run away, son, if you knowwhats good for you, said the man, after Frankhad used a wrench on the engine. Try crankingher again, and see if she refuses to work. There<—hold on, you fool—why, hes crazy, Bart! forFrank had suddenly whirled around, and taken aplunge over the side of the wooden bridge into thecold waters of Juniper Creek!

Run down to the bank and get hold of hirru ifyou can! continued Jim, harshly. This seemed at least reasonable, and Bart had noobjections to trying to do something along such lines. Dont see anything of him here! he announceda minute later, as he appeared below, and ran alongthe bank of the stream. The moon had gone behind a cloud, as thoughwishing to favor the escape of the unwilling chauf-feur. Hang the luck! Well, come up here then, andwell put off.
