Text Appearing Before Image:
IN VENICE nr^HE first time I ever went to Venice it-*- seemed so strangre as we went into thestation not to hear any noise. No crash of wheelson pavements, or clatter of horses hoofs or rattleof electric cars. Just a soft splash of oars every-where. And then when we crossed the platformto go to our hotel, there were the very boats, thegondolas, I had seen in pictures so many years, skimming back and forth over the canal. After-ward we had a gondola of our own, and Fran-cesco for a gondolier. I got mighty fond ofhim, he was so cheerful and willing, and once hetook me to his house. And there were his wifeand his father and the dearest little baby. Theycalled it a bambino. Francescos father was agondolier, too.
