ms the air-pas-sage from the pharynx to thetrachea. The large prominencethat may be seen or felt justbelow the lower jaw, on thefront part of the neck, is thelarynx. See Fig. 44. Thelarynx is a cartilaginous box,about two inches long, andmore than an inch in breadth.Its walls are formed of fourplates of cartilage, that so fitupon one another that we mayreadily change the shape andsize of the larynx.The interior of the larynx is lined with mucous membrane.This membrane is very sensitive, so that violent coughing iscaused if anything touches it. The larynx is closed at thetop by the epiglottis, a long piece of cartilage that is attachedto the base of the tongue. The epiglottis closes over thelarynx while we swallow, and at other times is raised, sothat the larynx is open for the passage of the air to andfrom the lungs. 104. The Vocal Cords.—The vocal cords, by whichthe sound is made, are within the larynx. They are notstrings, but are simply folds of the mucous membrane that 3-.- 4—
