ass is eithersome depression or saucer-like valley, or some place in a gorge where ahorizontal plateau is thrown out inside the gorge. October and Novemberare said to be good months about Mussoorie for Koklass. It feeds chiefly on leaves and buds, also roots, grubs, acorns and berries.Breeds in May throughout the Himalayas in all well-wooded localities withinthe limits above indicated. Eggs, 6—9, oval, more or less pointed towardsthe small end ; of a rich pale buff colour, densely and thickly speckled andspotted, or boldly and thinly blotched and splashed with deep reddish brown.They vary in size from i8^ to 2-29 in length, and from i39 to IS? inbreadth. Head with a crest composed of a few long hair-like feathers and dark ashyin colour; neck pale ashy, barred narrowly with dusky black; back andscapulars and rump pale reddish chestnut, barred with bluish black; tailwith the two long middle feathers pale yellow, broadly barred and speckledwith black; the rest barred with pale yellow, black, and dark chestnut; chin 60 PHASIANIN.^. soiled bufllsh; throat and breast yellowish ashy, with a few broken blackbars ; abdomen dusky ; wing coverts yellowish ash, with curved black barsand shining golden spots in some feathers; primaries dusky, with a few paleyellow bars; thigh coverts and vent yellowish chestnut marked with dusky.Bill pale horny ; nude orbits bright red ; irides yellowish hazel ; legs andfeet brown.
