The deformation measuring instrijment shov;n immediatelyunder the standard bar is covered v.ith tvro layers of felt toprotect the aluminum sides from the observers hand. The coveredtype W8.S used in malting the observations. The Berry type ofinstrument shoirn at the bottom of the f ig-ure has been providedTTith shorter legs than the one shoT^n above. The other featuresare the sa e as those of the felt covered instrument. Tlieshort-legged type is pictured standing on the calibrating device.To calibrate an instnjment, various corrected differences arechecl^ed by readings on the micrometer. The instrument reads directly to 1/5000 inch and in thisinvestigation the reading Y:as estimated to l/lOOOO inch, or
