Text Appearing Before Image:
Thedark blood then flows through the lungs, giving off itscarbonic acid and receiving a fresh supply of oxygen. It finally passes through the lungs, entering the four pulmonary veins, at 6,as bright arterial blood ;these veins bring theblood to the left auricle,7. When filled the au-ricle contracts, forcingits contents into the leftventricle, at 8. Whenthe left ventricle con-tracts, the valves betweenit and the left auricleclose, in the same man-ner and at the same timeas those on the oppositeside. The blood is thenforced out into the largeaorta, 9. From this ar-tery the blood cannotreturn to the heart, forvalves guard the opening here also. On through thearteries the blood flows until the finest capillaries arereached. Here the proper nourishment is given off tothe tissues, and some of the worn-out material receivedin its place. The blood, now dark and impure, returnsthrough the veins to the right side of the heart, only tostart again on another journey just such as we havedescribed.
