It arises from the lower and front partof the brain, and passes down through minute openingsin the skull just beneath it. Its fine fibers are distrib-uted to the upper half of the mucous lining of thenose; therefore only this part of the nasal cavity hasthe sense of smell. The lower half is endowed with ordinary sensibility sothat, when irritated inany way, it causes thereflex act of sneezing. The Sense of Smell. Weknow little about theaction of odorous bodies ;we cannot see an odor,neither can it be meas-ured.
