These canalsare filled with libers of livingmatter which are connectedwith the cells of the pulp.With the exception of theenamel, therefore, a tooth isa living tissue, having nervesand blood vessels in its cen-ter, bone cells in the cementaround its roots, and innu-merable fibers of tissue pen-etrating the dentine. Withthis knowledge it is not strangethat decay should make theteeth ache, and that extract-ing them should cause pain.Yet with all this living matterentering into their structurethey cannot repair themselveswhen injured. They shouldreceive, therefore, daily atten-tion and the best of care. Care of the Teeth. The im-portance of the teeth to the personal appearance, as wellas their relation to the digestive function, is so evident

The teethshould be cleaned at least once each day, while it wouldbe much better to cleanse them both morning and even-ing. Use a small, soft brush and only the best pow-ders, or washes, indorsed by some responsible and wellknown dentist. Consult a dentist as soon as any cavityis discovered, although a better plan is to have the teethexamined by a dentist every few months. The Saliva. The saliva is a fluid mainly derived fromthree pairs of large glands. Mixed with the saliva issome mucus from the mucous glands situated in thelining membrane of the mouth. Two pairs of the sali-vary glands are situated beneath the tongue and betweenthe two sides of the lower jawbone.
