The head ofthe king is, unfortunately, injured; but the remainderof the figure is perfect; and here, in the elaborateornamentation of the whole dress, we have an exampleof the careful finish of the time—a finish which is solight and delicate that it does not interfere with thegeneral effect, being scarcely visible at a few yardsdistance. The faults which still remain in this best period ofAssyrian art are heaviness and stiffness of outline in 444 THE SECOND MONAECHY. Chap.
