Inspection of the clay soils showedmoisture within two inches of the surface any-where within the 9 ft. contour depth to ground-water, indicating that eveporation was occur-ring from practically all of the areas within thiscontour. At the 6 ft. contour and within, thesurface was quite moist where not cultivatedand supported the vegetation typical of shallowground water. Where the surface was tilled akick of the heel would uncover moist soil.Every indication went to show that at the timeof our visit, evaporation was occurring to agreater or less extent from the whole area with-in the 9 ft. contour, and our experience inOwens Valley confirms th
