good friend, iBentham & Hookers British Flora. PLUMS AND DAMSONS. 151 Master John Tradescante, who hath wonder-fully laboured to obtain all the rarest fruitshe can hear of in any place of Christendome,Turky, yea of the whole world . John Gerarde wrote three centuries ago: To write of Plums particularly would requirea peculiar volume. . . . They arealready grown to an important commercialextent (Bailey). Other American species ofPrunus from which useful garden Plums havebeen evolved are P. angustifolia (ChickasawPlums) and P. hortulana (Wild Goose, Miner,Wayland, &c, Plums). A form of the last-namedhas been successfully hybridized with a Peach. The European Plums are largely cultivatedin some parts of the United States, and someof our most valuable varieties were raised there. Among them the Jefferson holds first rank;
