Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe grave of John Elias, the "Anglesey Pope" - geograph.org.uk - 939292.jpg |
English: The grave of John Elias, the "Anglesey Pope". Elias, a High Calvinist and High Tory was an autocratic figure. Married to the dowager Lady Bulkeley he was able to exert his influence at many levels in the county. A powerful fire and brimstone preacher he swayed public opinion in Anglesey against Catholic Emancipation and the 1832 Reform Bill. His intolerance of views other than his own and his readiness to excommunicate any who contradicted him led his enemies to dub him "Pab Mon" - the Pope of Anglesey.
