amost inveterate advocate of slavery. The whole force of the enemy, includingthese savages, has been estimated ashigh as 35,000, while that of the Union-ists was not more than 8,000. General Van Dorn* is entitled to thecredit of superior strategy, in havingso successfully turned the Union armyand interposed his whole force betweenit and the boundary of Missouri. The same reward wasbestowed upon Sigel—a fair tribute toa skilful commander who had added tohis other noble deeds that of rescuingthe whole army of Missouri from dis-grace or total destruction. General Van Dom is said to have exhausted his am-munition, and been obliged to resort to stones for thewant of cannon-balls.
