Insome axes the blade is set at an anglewith a view to more convenient work-ing when hewing out the interior ofthe canoes. Fijian axes are in thePolynesian style, but not so large. Inthe New Hebrides and the Solomonswe have smaller wedge-shaped roundedstone hatchets, sometimes wider, some-times narrower, tending in one placeto the oval, in another to the triangularshape. In Isabel and San Christovalthe blades are from 2^ to 8 incheslong, of a greenish gray colour, tri-angular or tongue-shaped, with aground edge. The tongue and ovalshapes appear in an extreme form inXew Caledonia. For the broad andquite circular hatchets jade affordedthe material. Artistically pretty pat-terns are either stitched or woven intothe binding of the- handles. NewIreland has ceremonial axes withbeautifully
