Should the estimated price come toa higher sum than was anticipated, we should not recom-mend to attempt to get the builder to take something offthe amount, as he will only do so by scamping the work;but, premising that he is a respectable and well-recom-mended man, we should advise that the extent of thebuilding be reduced in preference to the quality of thework. Cheap work and cheap materials are always thedearest in the end. Plans.—The plan of the building will vary very muchaccording to the aspect, disposition of land and otherpremises, and other local circumstances. These shouldbe very carefully studied, and the plans well matured, asthe success of the building will greatly depend on the dis-position of its various parts. We will lay down as one ofthe first principles, that no stall should be less than 6 ft. 32 The Stable- Yard and its Occupants.

Such arrangement as will put all the horses heads thesame way, with the light and ventilation behind them, willbe the most preferable, as enabling the doors and windowsto be opened without placing the horses in a draught.(See Plan No. 2.)
