Halfan hour before daybreak, the hunter, armed with a car-bine and numerous cartridges, lies in ambush oppositethe entrance of their customary retreat. There, concealedfrom every eye, he waits until there is liglit enough toenable him to fire. The moment he can discern thepiercing eyes of the peccary posted as sentinel, in whoserear the entire herd lies asleep, he shoulders his gun,takes careful aim, and lets go the trigger. CONCEALED FKOM EVERY EYE, HE WAITS. a subterranean growling becomes audible, and anotherpair of eyes glare at the opening which, a few minutesbefore, was occupied by the sentinel. A second dis-charge, and another victim; and thus the slaughter con-tinues to the twentieth, and even to the thirtieth,—unless, indeed, one of the animals, excited by the fre-quent explosions, does not wait for the impending blow,but makes a dash towards the hunter, followed by allthe other survivors; in which case there remains for thehunter but one resource,—to fly with all speed, andclamber up the first tree within his reach. If, during the fusillade, the sentinel-peccary lies deadin the trunk of the tree, obstructing the opening, theanimal behind it pushes forward the inert mass with hisshoulder, until he clears the passage.
