lsmoking ashes. Along a water-course, which poured its tribute into thelake, the devastating fire had been arrested; and the chiefof the tribe gave us to understand that this was very fortu-nate for our projects, since on the other side we shouldfind the country where we were going to hunt. These birds opened their slender beaks anduttered sob-like cries. Some herons had also chosen a resting-place on thisgranite rock, in whose interstices the dead branchesresembled sticks planted in the soil. A layer of mossand clay covered them, and on this slippery support restedthe noble birds, near a nest woven of slender twigs, inwhich the young herons received from the bills of theirparents their accustomed nourishment. We countedseventy-two, pressing one agains
