Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The ice house - view down the pit. The ice house - see > 935190 for a wider view - is now disused; it is a deep, brick-lined pit with a domed roof to control the circulation of air and a form of drainage at the bottom. A ladder leads down the empty pit, the entrance of which is secured by a padlocked gate. The pit used to be filled with ice that was packed between layers of straw which was often cut from nearby ponds or lakes. The ice was imported from Norway or America and could last up to two years; when no ice was available, snow or hailstones were gathered and used.
