or large Buddhas of bronze, those ofNara in Yamato and of Kamakura in Sagami are most prominentof all because of their enormous dimensions. The Nara-no-Dai-Butsu is in a spacious temple hall, 88*4 meters long, 51*8 metersbroad, and 48^2 meters high, whose roof is supported by 176 pillars.It represents Rochana (Vairochana), sitting with legs crossed underhim, upon an open lotus flower. The left hand of the idol restsupon the corresponding knee, the right is raised with its backturned towards the upper arm, in such a way, that the pointsof the three out-stretched fingers reach almost to the height of theshoulders, while the thumb and index finger are bent toward eachother. Buddha is represented in this manner as a teacher. Bronze Vase from Kioto. Wilhelm Engelmann, Leipzig. METAL INDUSTRY. 445 Tennd. In 1180 a fire destroyed the head. The present ugly onewas cast in 1570, at a time when art industry was in a very low-state. The oldest part of the body and the lotus flower consist ofplates from 18 to 30 centimeters thick, having a surface of 30 to 36centimeters, which are soldered together at the edges with Handaro(tin-solder). The entire height of this Buddha is 1605 meters(535), the length of the face 4-80 meters (16), the width, 2-35meters (95)» the width of the shoulders 86i meters (287), thelength of the middle finger 1*5 meters (5), that of one ear 2*55meters (8-5). The halo which surrounds the head has a diameterof 23*4 meters (78) and each of the 16 figures which appear in it,a length of 24 meters (8). The total weight of this Buddha is estimated at 450 tons. Inits casting, which did not succeed until after several vain attempts,copper, tin, quicksilver and gold are said to have been used.1 Ifth
