OLLOWING his Notes, on his returnfrom America, Mr. Dickens wrote a novelcalled Martin Chuzzlewit, which, like The Notes, created great excitementon this side of the water; and they whohad been fulsome in their adulation of the novelist wereextremely indignant that he should repay, as they felt,their land welcome with abuse and sarcasm. This bookappeared in numbers during 1844. A writer in TheIllustrated London News thinks that Mr. Dickenss 208 CHARLES DICKENS. 209 *method of composing and publishing his tales inmonthly parts, or sometimes in weekly parts, aided theexperience of this immediate personal companionship be-tween the writer and the reader.
