that Mr. Glad-stone and John Bright knew as much about religion as thatjovial pair of crusaders, Lord Randolph Churchill and SirDrummond Wolff. The two great men who had done most toexalt public life above the material level stood together to resistthe imposition of religious tests. To Gladstone the performanceof his duty in the Bradlaugh case was more painful than it wasto Bright, and therefore even more honourable ; for Gladstonewholly disliked everything about Bradlaugh, whereas Brightsaid one day to his son : It is not Bradlaughs atheism whichthey hate, but his unconscious Christianity.
