g. Again he had a helplessdiocese with but one complete house of worship in allthe great State of Illinois, the clergy consisting of theBishop, four presbyters, and two deacons. When weconsider what this meant for him in his advancedyears, scathed as he was physically with injuries fromaccidents incurred in solitary journeys through woodsand wide prairies, exposed to cold and heat, not tospeak of wounds spiritual, inflicted by those whom hehad loved and trusted, one wonders if the inspiringmotto still gave him full faith to go on. The answer is found in the fact that he had evennow determined to go again to England to seek for theonly aid possible for the work. The churches east ofthe Alleghanies were imitating in some degree the tardyand selfish inaction of the English Church before theconsecration of Bishop Seabury. No help in any waywas promised the Bishop for Illinois. Being in theEast to attend the General Convention, he decidedupon his course without returning to his family. How
