Hayne, inAugust, 1876 : I have been unsuccessful withyour poem, as I feared. I am very sorry to an-nounce this, but I am hardly surprised at theresult since learning that this summer is theblackest period ever known since we began tohave literature. The publishers say they neverknew the like; absolutely no books are sold, andthe papers and magazines are living, as much aspossible, on already accepted material. I have notbeen so pinched pecuniarily, driven by neces-sity, thwarted in all reasonable expectations, fortwenty years past. I have sent my wife anddaughter into the country, but cannot go myself. Bayard Taylor was a man of strong per-sonal attachments, noble, generous and up-right. ANNOUNCEMENT.—Among the eminentcontributors to the February Magazine will beDr. William A. Hammond and Rev.
