that will really coverthose eyes up, said the little man, with a sigh; andyour head is so big that I shall be obliged to tiethe spectacles on. But why need I wear spectacles? asked Jack. Its the fashion here, said the Soldier,and theywill keep you from being blinded by the glitter andglare of the gorgeous Emerald City. Oh! exclaimed Jack. Tie them on, by allmeans. I dont wish to be blinded. Nor I! broke in the Saw-Horse; so a pair ofgreen spectacles was quickly fastened over the bul-ging knots that served it for eyes. Then the Soldier with the Green Whiskers ledthem through the inner gate and they at oncefound themselves in the main street of the magnifi-cent Emerald City. Sparkling green gems ornamented the fronts ofthe beautiful houses and the towers and turretswere all faced with emeralds. Even the green mar-ble pavement glittered with precious stones, and itwas indeed a grand and marvelous sight to one whobeheld it for the first time. However, the Pumpkinhead and the Saw-Horse, 68

ITS THE FASHION HERE, SAID THE SOLDIER. Jack Pump k i nh eads Ride knowing nothing of wealth and beauty, paid littleattention to the wonderful sights they saw throughtheir green spectacles. They calmly followed afterthe green soldier and scarcely noticed the crowds ofgreen people who stared at them in surprise. Whena green dog ran out and barked at them the Saw-Horse promptly kicked at it with its wooden legand sent the little animal howling into one of thehouses; but nothing more serious than this happenedto interrupt their progress to the royal palace. The Pumpkinhead wanted to ride up the greenmarble steps and straight into the Scarecrows pres-ence; but the soldier would not permit that. SoJack dismounted, with much difficulty, and a servantled the Saw-Horse around to the rear while theSoldier with the Green Whiskers escorted the Pump-kinhead into the palace, by the front entrance. The stranger was left in a handsomely furnishedwaiting room while the soldier went to announcehim. It
