Wabash river, (t) right side,Here is seen a cabin above the mouth of the river, the remnant of atrading establishment here some years ago, but the waters provingdetrimental, it was abandoned. Here ends the Indiana Territory,and the Illinois commences, the divisional line between these twoterritories striking the Ohio just above the mouth of the Wabash,thence runs a due north course until it strikes the east and west line,which touches the most southerly point of Lake Michigan, thence toLake Erie due east, and to the Mississippi due west, in the parallel 954 964974 977 982 989992 NAVIGATOR. 115

H4 NAVIGATOR. of lat. 42* 6 north, making the divisional line 255 miles long, themouth of the Wabash, being in 37° 56 north latitude. Browns island, No. 83, 3 Lies close to the right shore—channel left side. Shawanee town, right side, 7 This village formerly belonged to the Shawanee nation of Indians.It now possesses about 30 indifferent cabin-roofed houses, with theexception of one or two that are shingled. The United StatesSaline salt works being near this place, they give employmentand afford a source of trade to such of the inhabitants as areindustrious or enterprising. The town is subject to the inundationsof the river, and during those of the winter and spring of 1813, theinhabitants were obliged to abandon their houses. The channel ofthe river is on the town side, there being a large bar opposite it onthe left side. Stevensons island, No. 84, Channel right side. Island, No. 85, (a small island.)
