Wild landvaluable for hop culture near Puyallup is worth from $75 tof 100 per acre, and costs about $100 more per acre to clear. Itis said that, taking an average of a period of years, every acrecultivated in hops will yield a net profit of at least $100. Theprice of hops varies widely from year to year, and is mainlydependent on the German crop. Some years it is claimedthere is no profit at all in hops raised in Washington, but inthe long run the hop farmers all become comfortably well off.There are few forms of agricultural industry where so muchmoney can be made from an acre of ground. After leaving Puyallup the railroad traverses for about eightmiles the Puyallup Indian reservation. These Indians owntheir land in severalty, and are, as a rule, industrious farmers.Their children are educated in the agency
