Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe old Beaumaris Grammar School - geograph.org.uk - 915776.jpg |
English: The old Beaumaris Grammar School. The Beaumaris Grammar School, often known as the David Hughes School after its founder, was started in 1603. For much of its existence it was a private boys' school- one famous old boy being General Sir Hugh Rowlands VC of Llanrug(1828-1909) - and it became a mixed state-run grammar school only after the passing of the Welsh Intermediate Education Act of 1889. The school, by then run on comprehensive lines, finally closed its doors in 1962, and was replaced by the purpose-built David Hughes Comprehensive School at Menai Bridge. The building has now been adapted to form the David Hughes Community Centre which also houses a branch of the County Library.
