ally known under the name of Areca lutescens and sold as suchby horticultural dealers. Oreodoxa regia H. B. K. Royal Palm. Plate XIX. The name Oreodoxa which has been taken from the Greek andis composed of a double word meaning mountain and glory, hasbeen applied to a tropical American genus consisting of five species.One is now cultivated in man) tropical countries and is much plantedin Honolulu. The Royal Palm has a whitish stout trunk reaching a height ofseventy-five to one hundred twenty feet, and is usually swollen inthe middle, tapering above and below; the base is also swollen andis often twenty-four inches in diameter. The leaves are crowdedat the apex, their sheaths are elongated and overlapping; the verynumerous leaflets are narrow and pointed; the inflorescence is bornebelow the leaf-sheaths. The spadix is large, the branches long,slender and drooping, the two cylindrical spathes or flower bractsare as long as the spadix or fleshy flowering spike. The flowers are Plate XIX.

The fruit is a drupe, or stone-fruit, and isoval-oblong and violet blue when mature. The Royal Palm, a native of Cuba and tropical America is themost typical of the genus Oreodoxa and is the most common palmin Cuba, where it is similarly used, as in Honolulu, for avenues, apurpo.-e to which it is admirably adapted. The peculiarity of thispalm is that there rises upon the white part of the trunk a grassgreen smooth shaft, appearing like a column placed upon another;it is from this green shaft that the leaf-stalk springs. It is said in the West Indies, that the broad part of the foot-stalks of the leaves, which form a hollow trough, are used by thenegroes as cradles for their children, and when cut up make ex-cellent splints for fractures.
