e, representing a young man in red holding anapple, is regarded by Mr. Berenson and others as anearly work of Raphael. The other, which differsentirely from the style of the Ferrarese or Bolognesemasters, is now generally recognised as the portrait otDuke Guidobaldo da Montefeltro of Urbino by theVeronese painter, Gian Francesco Caroto. In July, 1510, the Marquis Francesco Gonzaga wasreleased from his Venetian prison, by the interventionof Pope Julius, and came to Bologna to await his ten-year-old son Federigo, who was then on his way toRome as a hostage. Costa, too, was temporarily inthe city, in the train of the Marquis. Writing toMatteo Ippolito, on July 24, 1510, Isabella says: We are writing to Costa to paint us a portrait ofFederigo.
