That was exactly what Beaure-gard wanted, and the Confederategeneral immediately constructed fieldworks all along Butlers front, effectuallyclosing the neck of this bottle. HereButler remained in inactivity till theclose of the war. He built the elabo-rate signal tower seen in the picture sothat he could observe all the operationsof the Confederates, although he couldmake no move against any of themGenerals Gilmore and Baldy Smithboth urged upon Butler the laying ofpontoons across the Appomattox inorder to advance on Petersburg, the keyto Richmond. But Butler curtly repliedthat he would build no bridges forWest Pointers to retreat over. KA
