I. pathiot rvi. co. A DARING MOVE OF SEFfEMBER, 1862 Ruins of the Bridge at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. I>ee had invaded Maryland. Boldly dividing his army, whichwas but two-thirds as strong as that of MtCIellan, who was confronting him with scvciity-five thousandmen, he sent the swift and silent Jackson to capture Harpers Ferry, renowned as the ;)lacc where JulmBrown was captured. Europe, watching with keen interest tlie progress of the war, was dazzled liy thesplendid cooperation of the two great Confederate leaders. By the stroke at Harpers Ferry Lee removedan element of danger from his rear, while his advance into Maryland was causing consternation thnnigh-out the North. The Federal garrison of twelve thousand five hundred men at Harpers Ferry, out-num-bered and out-maneuvered by Jackson, surrendered on September 15th, after a two-days defense, andJackson rejoined Lee in Maryland just in time to stem the tide at Antietam.
