laid down their lives in her cause. General Sheridan was one of the first of the Union com-manders who appreciated, at its true value, the importance ofthe information service—a part of headquarters which shouldbe systematically organized and disci))lined, and whose reportsas to tojiography and the location of the foe could be absolutelyrehed U2X)n. Indeed, this was one of the secrets of Sheridansalmost uniform success. He was always well informed as tohis opponents movements, strength, and probable intentions. After Sheridans engagements in the Shenandoah valleyat Clifton and Berryville, he decided to dispense almost en-tirely with the use of civilians and alleged Confederate de-serters, and to dejjend entirely on Union scouts. For this pur-p(jse he organized a scout battalion recruited entirely from sol-diers who volunteered for this dangerous duty. These trooperswere disguised in the Confederate uniform wiien necessary, andwere paid from secret-service funds. (1!U) y /^^ < P ^
Text Appearing After Image:
;oT pue. CO CAVALRY TO KEEP THE PEACE—THE ONEIDA COMPANY Cavalrymen jjlaying cards, washing, smoking jnpcs, wliittling sticks, indolently leaning against a tree, donot fulfill the usual conception of that dashing arm of the service. These are the Oneida Cavalry, used asl)rovo.st-guards and orderlies throughout the war. Not a man of them was killed in battle, and the companylost only ten by disease. This does not mean that they did not do their full share of the work, but merelythat they exemplified the indifference or ignorance on the part of many military powers as to the properrole of the cavalry. The Oneidas were attached to Stonemans cavalry command with the .Vrmy of thePotomac from the time of their organization in September, 1861, to April, ISCe. They did patrol dutyand took care of the prisoners during .several months in the latter year. Thereafter they acted as head-quarters escort until they were mustered out, June 13, 1865, and honorably discharged from the service. («-13
