Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe plasterwork of Hill Great Chamber - 2 - geograph.org.uk - 1621579.jpg |
English: The plasterwork of Hill Great Chamber - 2 Above the fireplace in the great chamber was a very ornate piece of plasterwork. The winged figure in the centre is a copy of an engraving that shows the triumph of Patience over Fortune (Lady Luck). Bess of Hardwick had this commissioned to reflect her own long and steady rise to the top via four very rich husbands, each of whom died and left her a vast fortune. Note the little 'roof' created by English Heritage to protect this now 'outdoor' piece from the elements. Similar structures have been placed over all the remaining plasterwork of the old hall. Considering its age (1591), it is in very condition. |
