dditional note of charmto the fireside. Gridirons and other cooking utensils, though struc-turally of the utmost simplicity, were often given adecorative value and grace by making the handles orsome of the bars with a spiral twist and turning theends over in a curve. Tongs and the handles of hearth shovels were nearlyalways wrought with an eye to pleasing contour, butthe andirons were the articles of fireplace equipmentupon which the sniith spent his best efforts, both asregards general outline and the shaping of such detailsas feet, stocks, and finials. Many of the early andirons, wrought by obscure local smiths, possess a degree ofgrace that some of their more pretentious successors inbrass have failed to retain. Little iron lard-oil lamps and the so-called bettylamps, intended to hang on the end of a mantel or hookover the back of a chair, occasionally bore some smallornament on the handle by which the lid was lifted, oron the shank of the hook by which the lamp itselfwas suspended.
