The engines are generally of themarine type, and are fitted with cylinders 13 in., 22:; in.,and 34 in. diameter by 18 in. stroke, running at 200revolutions per minute, giving a piston speed of 600 ft. perminute. Theengines have been made with all the latest improvements, and are supplied with a separate combined direct-actingair-pump of unusually large dimensions, on account of thehigh temperature of the condensing water, which averagesas much as 80 degrees ; the air-pump is mounted upon amassive cast-iron bed-plate having the engine attachedthereto. This engine will have to travel about the samespeed as the main engines to maintain the desired vacuum.Th
