that they have averaged hotterthis year than for any year since1763, a period of 108 years. The deficiency in the amount ofrain is quite as remarkable as thehigh temperature. After giving atabular statement of the amount ofrain for the first nine months of1870 compared with twenty-eightpreceding years, Professor Loomisremarks: It will be seen that inJanuary Ave had considerably morerain than usual; but since that timeeacli month has shown a deficiency,which in eight months amounts totwelve inches. For the past fivemonths the deficiency is 10.76 inch-es; that is, the aggregate fall ofrains has been less than half theaverage, while the temperature hasbeen the highest known for morethan a century. The fall of rainfor the past five months has beenless than for the same months in anyyear embraced in the record. It isnot strange, then, that this vicinityshould have suffered from drought,and it is only remarkable that theinjury to vegetation should not havebeen more serious than it has been.
