Ifthe water remains transparent, thecandy is pure ; but if milky or de-positing a sediment, terra-alba, orsome equally harmful adulterationhas been used: That confectionery is extensivelyadulterated is a notorious fact. Ifanyone doubts it, he has only to go tothe wholesale dealer, who will givehim their prices for both the pure andthe impure article. Tons of terra-bula are daily devoured by unsuspi-cious lovers of sugar plums.
