what cheered our drooping spirits. We wandered for some time over abarren plain which bore no othermarks of vegetation, than a few ma- rine plants, which bound together the 26 light soil. I found abundance of tur-tles eggs, with which I filled mypockets; but the heat arising from thesand w^as very great, and my heartsunk within me, when I reflected onwhat we should endui;e without a sin-gle tree to shelter us from the burningheat of the sun; for as yet I had notsee one upon the island, A naked chain of barren rocks seem-ed to form a complete wall round thisdesolate plain; and as I then thought, served to defend it from the weaves ofthe sea; but as they were far abovethe level, I thought some advantagemight be gained from ascending one. With much labour and difficulty I atlength reached the summit, attendedby my little companion; and my fatiguewas amply repaid; for on looking downJ beheld not the sea-beach, as I hadimagined, but a delightful valley, fullof shady cocoa-nut and palm-trees.
