Dozens of sail-boats were in thewater, Their low bent sails in tack and flow,Turned white or dark to shade and sun ; and fresh from their dip in the surf Loose-haired, bare-footed, hand in handYoung girls went tripping down the^sand. The National Cemetery, the SoldiersHome, the Hampton Normal School—all are places of interest in easy distancefrom the hotel. Historic Hampton Roads, with itsbroad sheeny waters, snow-flecked with peaceful sails, opens out toward theWest. It was here that the frigatesCumberland and Congress had theirdeath fight with the Confederate ramMerrimac, and where she had her fa-mous combat with the Monitor.
