rom a mountain of that namein New York ; the valley proper is an al-ternation of smaller valleys and ridges,the former almost invariably limestone,though sometimes slate ; of the latter,black oak, chestnut and copper ridges,are composed of a formation, called byProfessor SafTord, the Knox dolomite,which has been decomposed, thus part-ing with its lime, and leaving particlesof flint scattered over the soil. Thevalleys contiguous are usually of slates Its Minerals. The mineral wealth of East Tennesseecompares favorably with any State in thiscountry. While it contains a greatvariety, including almost all the knownmetals, it abounds in the most useful ofthem, as iron, copper, zinc, coal, etc. Inthat part of the Appalachian chain bor-dering Tennessee on the east, and run-ning through Western North Carolina,large amounts of magnetic and speculariron ores have been found in several lo-calities, situated so that their outlet mustbe through East Tennessee. Pine Ridge (called White Oak), nearOoltewah, belongs to the Niagara period,and are the same rocks as are found atGenessee Falls. Along the southernside of the mountain is found a verypersistent bed of iron ore, known inNew York as the Clinton ore. Thevalley on the southern side of this ridgeis partially composed of sub-carbonifer-ous limestone, and, at some points, showsa considerable width of black slate. The Clinch Mountain is capped witha different sandstone, but has a similarvalley at its southern base. The grayand red knobs are irregular masses ofslates and limestone. the Appalachian and Cumberland moun-tains, are several ridges containing greatquantities of iron ore, mostly brown he-matites, but occasionally red hematite,of excellent quality.
