Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe sinking of HMAS TORRENS I (8670787452).jpg |
English: Having served in the Royal Australian Navy from 1916, latterly as a training platform for the Naval Reserve, HMAS TORRENS I was decommissioned and prepared as a target for Fleet Gunnery Practice. On 24 November 1930 Samuel J Hood, who was probably on board HMAS ANZAC, photographed the sinking of TORRENS off Sydney Heads. This photograph depicts a naval officer or sailor, probably on board ANZAC. In the distance to the right is probably HMAS CANBERRA. This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century. |
