Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The site of Alley Cross. A partially carved trough and some piles of stones at the site of the hamlet of Alley Cross, which probably consisted of a farm and three or four cottages. Called Holey Cross in 1798, Alley Cross is a corruption of Holy Cross, which probably indicates that a wayside cross stood here at the junction of the old Grane Road which here turned to the east again, and another track going south to the other side of the valley. Several families of farmers and handloom weavers lived here in the late 19th century. The lone tree on the skyline marks the position of Souter Hill Farm 498979
