This is the mansion at Arlington—a namesynonymous with deathless patriotism and graven upon the heartsof more Americans than that of any other spot on the globe. Indeed,not even hallowed Mount Vernon is so rich in historic associations,for Arlington is at once the old home of the adopted son of GeorgeWashington, who, with tender recollections of the personality of thatillustrious man, linked the past with the present century ; the formerhome of the principal actor in the drama of the Lost Cause, andas such endeared to all Southerners; the last resting-place of thousandsof heroic defenders of the Union, and therefore cherished at countlessfiresides in every Northern State; and, finally, the eternal bivouac ofhundreds of gallant martyrs of our recent war for suffering humanity,by whose solemn advent Arlington has been consecrated anew as atruly National Cemetery. 1
