THE most noted electrical event which has occurredin Europe in a long time was the opening,on February 4, of the electric elevated rail-way in Liverpool, locally known as the Liver-pool Overhead Railwaj.* A large attendance of notablesgraced the occasion, and the machinery was set in motionby the Marquis of Salisbury, who delivered an appropri- rapid communication between all the docks lying alongthe river. The railway is carried overhead for its wholelength, with the exception of about 270 yards, where itpasses on an embankment under an already existing linebelonging to the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Com-pany.
