Text Appearing Before Image:
ies, lunch baskets, and cigarsfor an hours enjoyment before again facing the weary ■miles of Manufactures building and the glare of the White STREET cars can do anything, from solving thecity problem to solving geological enigmas. Asto the latter, Professor Sollas, of Nottingham,England, says: Triassic pebbles are found indented, and many theories have been advanced for it. The besttheory being their slight pressure on each other and theearth tremors of that early period. As further and moreconvincing evidence, the professor exhibited samples ofpebbles taken from an ancient beach over which the tramline passed at Sandymount, a suburb beside Dublin Bay.They were covered with impressions essentially similar tothose on the trias pebbles. This result was due to theperpetual jarring produced by the passing trams. Underthe great pressure to which the trias pebble beds hadbeen exposed, the slightest trembling at points of contactwould, of course, produce similar or even more markt-deffects.
Text Appearing After Image:
LIFE ON THE MOVING SIDEWALK City. The old ladies and infirm individuals, who fearordinary methods of traction, stepped on to the movingplatform without a tremor. Its absolute safety was itsgreatest recommendation. As an exhibition of the carrying capacity of thisremarkable device, we are confident that no heavier stresscould have been placed on any method of transportationthan was put upon the small length of the moving side-walk on Illinois day, Chicago day, Swedish day, and thelast heavy crowds of October. The fact that on lessthan a mile of sidewalk 150,000 people could be carriedevery day, without crowding, and seating every one, illustrates the capacity of the sidewalk and its applicabilityto the sudden gorge of humanity at any one point, suchas bridges, viaducts, down town districts, and the like. The Chicago company which built the Casino pierconstruction is highly pleased with its venture, and haveother plans in view, which will be made public at a laterdate. STANDARD FORM FOR
