e American.Street Railway Association for next year has already begun,and two active candidates are working hard for it. Detroit was first in the race having put in its request lastjear at St. Louis, and having again followed it up in thespring when there was some prospect that Niagara mightnot conclude to carry out the plans there for an exhibitbuilding which it proposed to erect. That matter wassolved by securing the old armory in which, with the newannex, the convention will be held and the exhibits displayed. Detroit offers many attractions and inducements, and theConvention League of that city has joined with the streetrailway companies in extending the invitation. The hotelsare all that could be wished, the rates are reasonable, andgood place for exhibits is offered in the large brick, steamheated building used for concerts, etc. It is on the groundfloor and close to hotels. The local roads and naturalattractions at Detroit would certainly make it an ideal placein which to meet.

AFTER THE COLLISION ON THE CHICAGO SUBURBAN. car was seen approaching at full speed to make up for losttime. Both motormen shut off the current and applied theair brakes; the rails, however, were wet from the mist andcaused the wheels to slide. Almost before the motormen had realized their danger thecars met, breaking in the front ends, as shown in the illus-tration. Nearly all the passengers on the cars were bruisedby being thrown against the seats or cut by broken glass, 2 ibeing so injured, some quite seriously but none fatally. Thetwo motormen were seriously hurt, and it is astonishing thatneither was killed. When the car bodies struck, the trucks were thrown for-ward, breaking or bending the center pins, brake rods, etc.;the trucks and motors were apparently little damaged. Thetotal damage to the cars is estimated at $500. That theaccident was not more serious is due to the effective action ofthe Christensen air-brakes with which the cars are equipped.The fog was so dense that on
